The City of Kalona had their first reading of an ordinance related to their participation in the National Flood Insurance Program this week. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says at Monday’s meeting the ordinance that’s required for those participating in the National Flood Insurance Program or NFIP had its initial reading.

He says the ordinance outlines how they’ll manage their flood plain area with the Department of Natural Resources. He adds the outline is a standard document and is similar to one Washington County is considering.

He says in essence the document says they’ll have “smart” growth within the flood plain. Meaning any new homes or substantial remodels in that area will need to be reviewed by the DNR to determine if it’s going to be an issue.
