The Keota City Council has elected to bring the town’s building code up to current standards. City Clerk Niki Osweiler says the council passed the ordinance mainly in response to a December fire that destroyed several buildings on Main Street.  The issue was up for discussion after Bill Miller, owner of five downtown buildings, requested to start construction of new structures.

Osweiler says the council decided to adopt the 2009 International Building Code as the standard.  She says as long as Miller complies with the new building code, he can start construction.

However, Miller has requested five extra feet of space to add behind the current lots.  Osweiler says the land technically has to be put up for auction at a public hearing before Miller can proceed with those plans.

The public hearing will take place at the council’s next meeting July 25th.
