Poinsettia plants in bloom used as traditional Christmas decorations

Red, pink, white, and gold leaves decorate homes this time of year with poinsettias. Horticulturists with Iowa State University have shared that when buying a poinsettia, select one with a dark green foliage and brightly colored leaves. Avoid those that have wilted foliage, broken stems, or few leaves. The festive plants should be kept out of reach of small children and pets.

It’s advised that the plants should be kept warm, as exposure to freezing temperatures even for a brief moment, may cause the leaves to blacken and drop. So when you purchase one, put it in a plant sleeve and then in a warm vehicle. When you get it home, place it near a well-lit area but don’t have it touch a cold window pane. Water poinsettias when the soil surface becomes dry to the touch. When receiving good care, they should last several weeks and see the new year.
