On Tuesday, voters in Lone Tree and Sigourney cast their ballots on a Revenue Purpose Statement for each respective school district. Receiving 82.7% of the vote in Lone Tree and 95% in Sigourney, both public measures were approved.

The Revenue Purpose Statement for the districts is in regards to funds received from the State of Iowa Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) Fund. Through voter approval, it allows the schools to use the funds for a variety of purposes and needs.

Superintendent for Lone Tree Community School District, Kurt DeVore, explained to KCII that SAVE funds do not affect the taxation of residents, but instead come through Iowa’s penny sales tax. “It’s already being collected. We can’t say yes or no to collecting that. It’s the state that’s driving that collection. It just allows the school district the ability and flexibility to say here are our needs and being able to prioritize those and then use those funds accordingly.”

Sigourney Superintendent, Kevin Hatfield, echoed a similar message. A release from Hatfield stated that the approval of the Revenue Purpose Statement “will allow maximum flexibility to address ongoing maintenance, infrastructure, and technology needs in the district.” Both DeVore and Hatfield also expressed gratitude to everyone who cast their vote.

Election results are unofficial until the canvass process has been completed in the next few weeks.
