Memorial Day services are usually held at cemeteries to honor those veterans who have served our country. But what about those who aren’t enshrined in stone?

For a few decades now the Riverside VFW has honored veterans lost at sea with a service at the English River bridge in Riverside. This is one of four Memorial Day services Riverside VFW is a part of. They will start Memorial Day at the Riverside Cemetery at 10 a.m., they’ll then go to St. Vincent’s Cemetery, followed by the St. Stanislaus Cemetery, and then concluding with a service at the English River bridge. Around 11 a.m. they will perform a short service at the bridge, with the firing squad firing over the river and throwing a bouquet into the river to honor those veterans. The day will conclude at the Riverside VFW where they will be having a luncheon to reward two Highland High School students with a $1000 scholarship from the VFW and a $1000 scholarship from the Auxiliary.
