Heated Debate over Gas Tax and Road Funding

As previously reported by KCII, lawmakers in Iowa are looking at increasing the gas tax eight to ten cents a gallon over two years. County Engineer Jacob Thorius has been pushing for an increase in the gas tax, which hasn’t been raised since 1989, in an effort to increase funding for Washington County’s roads and bridges. The subject was brought up again at the third Legislative Briefing on Saturday.

Gas Tax Increase Passes House Subcommittee

As previously reported, lawmakers have been considering an increase in the state’s gas tax. The gas tax has not been raised since 1989, and Iowa’s roads and bridges have been rated the third worst in the country.

Branstad Releases Road Use Tax Fund Savings

As previously reported, Governor Terry Branstad had requested that the IDOT find $50 million dollars in savings from the Road Use Tax Fund to help repair and maintain Iowa’s roadways. Yesterday, Branstad released a report that outlined the areas where the IDOT found the $50 million in savings.

Governor Supports Gas Tax Increase

Governor Terry Branstad says he would be open to an increase on Iowa’s gas tax to help fund road and bridge repair. Iowa is currently ranked in the bottom third for road and bridge conditions.
