The Iowa Transportation Commission has approved funding for the SAFE Routes to Schools program that several communities in Southeast Iowa have applied for. Julie Heindel, the City Clerk of Columbus Junction, tells us that they received $87,500 for the program in their community. Kalona received $141,182 for their program. These funds will be used to place sidewalk in areas that children use to get to and from school that are currently unsafe because of a lack of sidewalks and heavy traffic. The total funding released by the Iowa Transportation Commission was over $1.5 million.
