Iowa Senators this week approved an amendment to the state government reorganization bill that would close the mental health institute in Clarinda, rather than the one in Mt. Pleasant. Late last year, the Department of Human Services recommended closing the Mt. Pleasant facility to save the state nearly two-million dollars. This week’s Senate amendment could be reversed in the House. Many are hopeful lawmakers can find a way to keep all four of Iowa’s Mental Health Institutes open.
