The shotgun deer hunting season opener is today. The first split of the season runs until Wednesday. Shotgun hunting will reopen next Saturday, and remains open until the Sunday before Christmas.
Hunters in Southeast Iowa can harvest antlerless deer in this early split. Washington County has a quota of 750 antlerless deer. Quotas set for surrounding counties range from 450 in Keokuk County to 1,650 in Jefferson County.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters to report their deer harvest by midnight the day after the deer is recovered.
