With Daylight Saving Time starting this weekend, it’s a good time to make sure your smoke detectors are up to par. According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms. Sigourney Fire Chief Bill Halleran Jr. recommends replacing smoke detector batteries twice a year, “Smoke detectors are imperative. You should have them on at least every level of the house; checking them twice a year, the spring forward and fall back are the two easiest times to remember.” In addition to regularly replacing the batteries, smoke detectors should be replaced after at least every 10 years.
