With lawmakers working around the clock to prevent a looming budget crisis for the state, Washington County’s unemployment offices could be in danger.  Budget cuts could mean closures for unemployment offices, which would then be moved to local libraries.  Anne Skaden, Director of the Kalona Public Library, says she received notice of this possibility recently, and has been waiting for a response from the state about the next steps.  If the proposal is implemented, residents seeking to sign up for unemployment would then do so at their local library.

Skaden says she’s hopeful Iowa lawmakers are able to hash out the budget this week.  Until then, she and her staff will continue to wait for word from the state, which could come as early as Friday.
