Mitchell County is having problems with the use of steel wheeled tractors on their roads. They have even gone as far as to hire a private investigator to see who has been using them. The roads have been heavily damaged by the steel wheels. The county banned the wheels previously, but the Mennonite Community cites religious beliefs as their reason for still using them. David Patterson, Washington County Engineer, says Washington County doesn’t have a problem with the wheels. He says many of the Amish Communities around Kalona use the wheels, but the unpaved shoulders on Washington County’s roads are wide enough that the tractors don’t have to drive on the paved portion of the road, and don’t do any damage because of this. He says if they did have to drive on the damaged roads, they might cause some damage.
