From candy and cookies to large dinners and decorations, there are many elements of the holidays to take comfort in but can also be a danger for furry companions.

PAWS & More Animal Shelter Director Amber Talbot says there are several hazards to keep in mind for pet owners this time of year, such as Christmas trees, ornaments, lighting and electrical wires, and holiday food. Talbot recommends to securely anchor a tree so it doesn’t tip and fall, causing possible injury to a pet. For live trees, this can also prevent the tree water from spilling, which may contain fertilizers and be a breeding ground for bacteria which can make a pet sick.

She says digested tinsel can also lead to severe vomiting, dehydration, and possible surgery, “Tinsel is always one that if it’s easy for them to get into, kitties like to play at the Christmas tree and that tinsel can really be something that is easily ingestible for them which can cause issues definitely. And just reminding people, you know, try not to give your animal a lot of people food, table scraps over the holidays as well. That food may be so yummy for them and us but their systems really are not designed for that and it just can create so many health issues down the road that even though it’s tempting, I would just definitely avoid that.”

Talbot also advises if you are enjoying an adult holiday beverage to be sure to place them where pets cannot get to them. If you don’t have a pet but would like to help some furry friends, Talbot says the shelter is still seeking donations to fill their residents’ stockings. You can find more information here.
