A tornado and funnel clouds were seen in Henry County Wednesday by trained weather spotters, and an emergency management coordinator reported a funnel cloud near Mediapolis.

According to the National Weather Service, at least one tornado in the storm was confirmed and damage surveys are being conducted today to determine the tornado’s strength. A tornado warning was issued for Henry and Jefferson Counties. A tornado was reported near Salem at 3:05 p.m.

As the severe thunderstorms swept across southeastern Iowa Wednesday afternoon with large hail, heavy downpours, and strong winds, Washington received a total of 1.3 inches of rain. A severe thunderstorm watch was put into effect for Washington County from 1 to 8 p.m. and the KCII Severe Weather Action Team was on standby in case the storm became severe locally to bring live coverage.
