The Washington Tree Committee is in its 28th year and has planted about 12,000 trees.
Marde McConnell recently provided the required annual report for the city council. She said in 2018, Washington was again recognized as a Tree City USA by The National Arbor Day Association, that makes 27 years. The group also gave away 130 trees and 100 saplings. McConnell presented the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award to the Noon Kiwanis for their volunteer efforts in helping the tree committee with projects, including planting 25 trees in Sunset Park. The committee also contacted homeowners who had hazardous or ash trees that were removed in city right-of-way and offered replacement trees. The plan is for those to be planted this year as part of a replacement program that is partially funded by the Washington Iowa Betterment Foundation.
