City elections are approaching next Tuesday, and there are requirements to remember whether you cast your vote in person, or absentee.

Voter registration forms can be filled out at the Washington County Auditor’s Office, or on the Iowa Secretary of State website. Registration can also be completed on election day when you cast your ballot. Voters must be 18 years of age on election day. While a person will be asked for a form of identification, it is not yet required. According to Secretary of State Communication Director Kevin Hall, “The Voter ID provisions do not go into effect until January 2018, and that is with a ‘soft rollout,’ meaning if a voter does not bring his/her ID to the polling place, they can sign an affidavit attesting to their identity, and will be allowed to vote.”

Recommended ID forms are a valid driver’s license, non-driver ID card, U.S. Passport, U.S. military ID, ID card issued by employer, or student ID issued by a high school or college. If your photo ID doesn’t contain your current address, you may bring another document such as a residential lease, utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, or government check or document.

Polling locations for the City of Washington on Election Day, November 7, are Wards 1 and 4 at the courthouse, and Wards 2 and 3 at Stewart Hall in the United Presbyterian Home.
