An extra kindergarten session is being added in the Washington School District due to higher enrollment for the fall. Initially there were five kindergarten classes and one alternative kindergarten class scheduled for next school year. Superintendent Willie Stone tells KCII News that the goal is to keep class sizes lower so the sixth kindergarten class is needed, “We are getting enough students right now, we’re sitting at about 118 students. And if we went with what we currently have it would put our numbers up to about 25 in each class, and for kindergarten that’s a really hard number to have. We really like to have that number be around 20.” The school board approved having a sixth kindergarten teacher. Stone said it’s also likely that five to 10 more students will sign up during the summer break. Stone adds that the enrollment numbers are growing, especially in the lower grades. Currently there are 62 students registered for three-year-old preschool, the highest number of students for this time of year says Stone. And the district has added a fourth class there.
