Due to fiber being moved, Windstream customers across Washington County were without phone services Tuesday morning.

Washington County Communications 911 Supervisor Cara Sorrells advised there was a disruption in service as early as 2:30 a.m. The outage caused the non-emergency phone lines to be down, however 911 emergency calls could still go through. The dispatch center was not notified of the outage by the company. Also, the Washington Community School District was without phone service.

Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Windstream David Avery tells KCII News, the company was reloacting two buried fiber cables overnight to accomodate road construction along Kentucky Avenue in Olds and the work took longer than expected to complete. According to Avery, “customers could make local calls, but were unable to make long-distance calls or dial 911. Internet service also was disrupted for some customers.” The outage impacted customers in 11 communities in eastern Iowa.
