Kirkwood Community College’s Workplace Learning Connection is an intermediary that provides career exploration and preparation experiences for local middle and high school students in Washington County: by connecting them with area professionals in an effort to develop Iowa’s future workforce. Kirkwood is looking for volunteers to talk with middle school students about financial well-being. On April 14th, over 260 8th-grade students from Highland, Mid-Prairie, and Washington will participate in the annual Financial Literacy Fair at KC Hall in Washington from 8:30 am-12 pm. Throughout the year, these students learn about career paths, the basics of budgeting, and financial well-being. Based on their aptitude and interests, they select a career, determine their monthly income and develop a virtual budget. Financial Literacy Fair is a fun interactive way for students to learn the connection between careers/education and income/lifestyle, wants vs. needs, and how quickly it all adds up. Community volunteers help to make this happen. No experience necessary. A brief volunteer training is given before students arrive.
