Description: The Ottumwa Civic Music Association will present Les Trompettes 7:30 PM, May 10, 2014, at the Bridge View Center,
102 Church St, Ottumwa IA.
Composed of five musicians, this unique group plays a wide range of instruments from the piccolo to bass trumpet.
While pursuing their classical training, they have let their taste for quirky fun run loose on stage making an entertaining
and humorous performance.
Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for students or by season ticket. Indian Hills Community College students are admitted free
with their student ID.

Description: Beef producers interested in learning more about fescue management and comparing fall versus spring calving should plan to attend one of two upcoming beef management update sessions in southern Iowa. The sessions are May 20 and May 21 and feature animal science professor and beef cow specialist Ken Coffey from the University of Arkansas.

The May 20 update will be held at the Afton Community Center on the west side of the town square. The May 21 location is the Rathbun Regional Water Association Headquarters, 16166 Highway J29.

Session start time is 7 p.m. for both locations. The session cost is $10, payable at the door.

Description: The annual “Update for Veterinarians” program by Iowa State University’s Iowa Beef Center features a full day of education and demonstrations focused on beef cattle. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef program specialist Joe Sellers is organizing the program and invites practitioners who work with cattle to make plans now to attend the May 21 event at the Iowa State University McNay Research Farm near Chariton.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the McNay headquarters with the first speaker starting at 9:15 a.m. The group will then travel to the beef facilities for two sets of breakout sessions. Three more presentation sessions will follow lunch at the farm headquarters, with the program ending about 3:30 p.m.
Those who preregister by May 15 will pay $50 per person, which includes the noon meal. Those who preregister after May 15 and those who register onsite will pay $70. All registrations are done through the Lucas County Extension Office in Chariton.

Description: Current issues in rural property management, appraisal, and sales and purchase are up for discussion at the Soil Management and Land Valuation Conference, May 21 at Iowa State University.

Sponsored by the Iowa State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and ISU Extension and Outreach, the Soil Management and Land Valuation Conference is intended for farm managers, rural appraisers, real estate brokers and other rural professionals interested in the land market in Iowa. The 2014 program, at the Scheman Building on the Iowa State campus, is coordinated by the Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.

The registration fee is $100 on or before May 7 and $110 after May 7. Complete conference information, including registration, agenda, location and contact information, is available at

The Iowa Real Estate Commission has approved this conference for five hours of continuing education for renewal of a real estate and broker\’s license. This conference also has been approved for five hours of continuing education for Iowa Appraisal License renewal.

This is the longest running conference at Iowa State, said Jennifer Vit, with ISU Extension and Outreach Conference Planning and Management. It is designed for anyone who has an interest in agricultural land, land management and land valuation. The program is planned each year by an independent group.

Larry Trede, executive director of ASFMRA, and chair of the conference planning committee, said that this year’s conference “will focus on issues that are currently important to rural agricultural professionals.”

Leading experts will discuss five current issues and their implications to soil management and land valuation: the U.S. economy and its relationship to Iowa agriculture; weather and climate change and the impact upon agriculture; the use of unmanned aerial systems (drones) and how they can impact agriculture in Iowa; energy production, particularly hydraulic fracturing in oil production; and the impact of livestock production in Iowa and significant trends and changes occurring in the livestock industry and its relationship to Iowa agriculture and Iowa farmland.

Crop Scouting

Description: The Integrated Pest Management program at Iowa State University is hosting its fourth crop scouting competition on Aug. 5 for teams of Iowa high school students. Organizers announced the 2014 theme, Crop Scouting Innovations, this week along with extending an invitation to participate to teams of high school students (those completing grades 9-12). Top scoring teams are awarded monetary prizes of $500 for first place, $300 for second, $150 for third and $50 for fourth place.
More information about the crop scouting competition and instructions on how to register a team are available at www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/cropscouting. Teams must be registered by June 15. Registration is $50 per team; the fee will be refunded when the team attends the competition. Payment by check is due along with the registration form by June 15.

Description: The Etude club holds an annual spring show, this year featuring songs and skits from the 1950\’s radio/TV show \”Your Hit Parade\”. At this show the Etude club takes free will donations and all proceeds go into our scholarship fund that is given to Music students who apply for the Etude club music scholarship. This show is open to the public. There will be fellowship after the show with refreshments being served by Etude club members.
