Beef Show

Description:
Johnson County 4-H’ers will be hosting an Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association (IJBBA) sanctioned open beef show on Sunday, April 27th, 2014 at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. This event is open for all youth up to age 21. To exhibit at this show, there are no requirements to be a member of the IJBBA or a member of 4-H. However, members of the IJBBA will receive points.

Check-in will be from 8:00-9:30 a.m. The show will begin at 11:00 a.m. Entry fee is $35.00 per head. Pre-registration is $30.00 per head if registered by April 11th. Make checks payable to Johnson County Extension Office, 3109 Old Highway 218 South, Iowa City, IA 52246. Prizes will be awarded to Supreme Breeding and Reserve Breeding Champions as well as Supreme Market and Reserve Market Champion animals.

Health papers are required on all animals. If intending to show in a breed division registration papers are required. Generators are recommended, but not required.

Description: The Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) is making thousands of dollars in scholarships to incoming freshmen in the fall of 2014, or current undergraduates at ISU majoring in animal science or a agriculture or human sciences that is related to the animal industry.

IFFAA is a non-profit organization comprised of agricultural enthusiasts dedicated to encouraging 4-H and FFA livestock, poultry and agricultural project members to pursue ag-related careers. IFAA manages the annual Iowa State Fair “Sale of Champions” and the“Winner’s Circle” Scholarship and Awards program.

4-H

Description: The annual food safety & quality assurance training dates have been set for Washington County 4-H’ers. This educational program helps youth understand their role in the food supply chain and educates youth about the importance of following a quality assurance program when raising market animals.

All market and breeding beef, bucket bottle, swine, sheep, dairy (cattle & goat), meat goat, rabbit and poultry exhibitors are REQUIRED to be FSQA certified to exhibit at the Washington County Fair and Iowa State Fair in 2014.

Certification may take 2 forms: attend a training or obtain certification by testing.

Junior Members (4th-6th grade) MUST TAKE THE CLASS every year as a junior.

Region 15 (Washington, Iowa, Johnson, & Keokuk Counties) will host two training dates. Saturday, March 29 at the Washington County Extension Office from 8:30 a.m. – noon. OR Monday, April 7 at the Johnson County Extension Office from 5:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Choose only one to attend. All youth will participate in a variety of FSQA hands-on training and mini-show clinic sessions.

Intermediate Members (7th-9th grade )
Option 1: Take the class every year. See dates listed above.
Option 2: Take the class, then take the test. When the test is passed, you don’t have to take it again until a senior member.
Option 3: Take the test and pass. When the test is passed, you don’t have to take it again until a senior member.

Senior Members (10th-12th grade)
Option 1: Take the class every year. See dates listed above.
Option 2: Take the class, then take the test. When the test is passed, you don’t have to take it again.
Option 3: Take the test and pass. When the test is passed, you don’t have to take it again.

The tests will be available in Washington County from 8 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 29. The test may also be taken by making an appointment with the Washington County Extension Office during business hours. Tests may be taken up until July 1. Please take care of this certification in a timely fashion to ensure county fair eligibility.

If 4-H’ers are unable to attend one of the trainings, they may attend training in another county, however, please contact the Washington County Extension Office, 319-653-4811, as soon as possible for those opportunities.

4-H’ers involved in the Single Source Commercial Swine Class and any 4-H’ers beginning in the Swine project area is encouraged to attend the “Know Your Swine” workshop Wednesday, March 26, 6:30 p.m. at the Washington County Extension Office.
