Extension

Description: Entries are wanted for the Open Class Division of the Washington County Fair including numerous classes of hobbies – Art and photography, all crafts, all types of needlework and quilts, woodworking, culinary, flowers and plants as well as dried arrangements. The largest vegetable contest will be held again this year. These entries can be brought to the old school house building on the fairgrounds on Monday, July 14 from 9 am to 12 noon and there is an entry fee of 50 cents per article or $5.00 for 11-20 articles, or $7.00 for 21-30 articles. Judging by Bonnie Knutson of Kalona will begin at 1 p.m. with premiums for first and second place and rosette ribbons will be awarded.

Exhibits can be picked up on Thursday, July 17 at 8 p.m. For further information, a complete listing of classes can be found in the fair book available on the Washington County Extension website https://www.extension.iastate.edu/washington/ or by calling Judy Sieren at 641-636-2104 or Shirley Bohr at 319-646-6512. Special displays by a person or group are also welcome.

IMS Golf

Description: Iowa Mennonite School\’s annual Golf Outing is scheduled for Saturday, June 14th at the Kalona Golf Club. It will be a 4-person best-ball. Proceeds from the entry fee goes to the Student Financial Assistance program. Registration starts at 7:30, shotgun start is at 8am.

Description: Cari Nicely, Naturalist, will talk about these misunderstood creatures. Skunks have many wonderful traits about them. Come learn while playing games. Educational for all ages. Free and open to the public. Preregistration is appreciated, but not necessary. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. Sponsored by QP&P.

Description: English River Outfitters will hold a carnival on Saturday, June 14th from noon to 5pm at Hall Park in Riverside. There will be games, food, drinks and live music. Proceeds go to support their Disabled Veterans Life Skills program.

Description: IDALS will offer pesticide testing on June 13 at the Washington County Extension office from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

All tests are available at this site and will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tests are administered by the Iowa Department of Ag and Land Stewardship. Because it may be necessary to cancel or reschedule a test date or site, it is recommended you confirm the test time and site prior to travel.

Description: All youth intending to exhibit swine, lambs or feeder calves at Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Livestock Exposition in Omaha, Nebraska in September must have DNA samples, waivers, and payment to the Washington County Extension Office by June 13. Nominating through the Iowa State Fair process is not acceptable for Ak-Sar-Ben. An additional DNA sample must be collected. Cook This!

Title: Cook This!
Description: Youth in grades 5-12 are invited to compete in the fifth annual 4-H “Cook This!” culinary challenge. Participants will compete in a preliminary competition on Wednesday, June 18 in the College of Human Sciences on the Iowa State University campus. Top teams will advance to the Cook This finale to be held on Thursday, Aug. 7 at the Iowa State Fair.

Online applications to participate in the 2014 Cook This event will be accepted until May 31. Youth may apply in teams, pairs or individually; individual applicants will be matched with other youth. At least one person from each team is required to be a member of 4-H.
