“Farm Video” Bill Passed and Signed

It is now illegal for a person to use false information to get a job at a farm with the intent of doing unauthorized activities. The House and Senate approved the bill early this week, and Governor Branstad signed the bill into law yesterday. The issue comes about after animal rights groups have used false information during job interviews in order to get video of animal treatment at farms.

TIF Causes Problems for Property Tax Reform

As previously reported, lawmakers are looking at reducing the percent of taxes collected from commercial properties from 100 to 40%. A bill for tax reform has passed the House and is on to the Senate. Our local representatives, Senator Greiner and Representative Klein, both wanted to see this reform passed although they shared concerns, saying it needs to be done very carefully.

FSA Conservation Reserve Program Meeting Announced

The USDA’s Farm Service Agency, or FSA, has announced informational meetings for their Conservation Reserve Program. The Conservation Reserve Program allows landowners to sign up environmentally desirable land for continuous conservation practices.

Date Set for Keota Budget Hearing

Iowa Prisons Will Soon Offer Mp3 Players

Inmates in Iowa’s prisons, including those at the Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility, will soon have access to Mp3 players. Sheryl Dahm, a spokeswoman for the Iowa Prisons System, says inmates have access to cassettes and tape players now, but the prisons are trying to keep up with technology.

Iowa Plates Up for a Switch

License Plates in Iowa have stayed largely the same for 13 years. But later this year, the IDOT expects to run out of the “number then letter” series of plates, and will switch to plates with letters first.
