Description: IMS will begin its 72nd year of classes on August 23. New student and family orientation is on August 22 at 7 p.m. The all-school retreat will happen all day on August 24 at Crooked Creek Christian Camp in Washington. And the IMS All-Parent meeting will take place on August 28 at 7 p.m.

Lower Skunk River Watershed Tour

Title: Lower Skunk River Watershed Tour
Description: The Lower Skunk River Watershed Project will be hosting an operation/implement tour of Steve Berger’s farm in Wellman with a tour of an established bioreactor site on Rob Stout’s farm outside of West Chester. A free lunch will be provided and served by Washington County Iowa Pork Producers. This tour will take place on September 7 at 10 a.m. A free charter bus ride will be available to those in the southeast Iowa area.

Jefferson County Field Day

Title: Jefferson County Field Day
Location: Fairfield
Description: ISU Extension and Outreach will be having a field day August 31 to address the current dry conditions. Topics to be discussed include adjusting seeding methods and the effect potential herbicide carryover may have on establishing a cover crop. The workshop will be held at the Jefferson County Activities Building in Fairfield. A complimentary meal will be provided. The workshop is free and open to the public, but reservations are requested.

Fall Festival

Title: Fall Festival
Description: St. James Catholic School will be having their fall festival on Sunday, September 10 at the KC Hall in Washington. Dinner will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Country store opens at 9 a.m. The dinner costs $10 for adults, $5 for kids, and 5 and under are free. Proceeds benefit the St. James Catholic School.

Conger House Museum Open

Title: Conger House Museum Open
Description: The Conger House Museum will be open Sunday, August 20th from 1-4 p.m. The exhibit this summer features our Washington County WWI collection to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the U.S. involvement in the Great War. The museum will be open on the third Sunday of each month from June through October. Entrances is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

WACO Orientation

Free Mobile Clinic

Title: Free Mobile Clinic
Location: Columbus Junction, IA
Description: The University of Iowa will be having their next free mobile clinic from 10 am-1 pm on Saturday August 26 at the Columbus Community Senior Center in Columbus Junction. The mobile clinic will perform free blood pressure checks, blood sugar and cholesterol checks, wellness and sports physicals and more. They will have a spanish interpreter on staff.

Back to School Ice Cream Social

Description: The Mid-Prairie elementary and middle schools will be having a back-to-school ice cream social on Monday, August 21 from 3:30-7:30 p.m. at Mid-Prairie East and Mid-Prairie West Elementary Schools and from 5:30-7 p.m. for 5th graders at Mid-Prairie Middle School. Come get a cool treat and drop off your student’s school supplies.

Caregivers Support Group

Dog Paddle

Description: PAWS & More Animal Shelter is hosting a “Dog Paddle” at the Washington Steele Aquatic Center on Sunday, August 27 from 1-4 p.m. There is a $5 per dog entry fee. All proceeds will benefit PAWS & More Animal Shelter. There will not be microchipping services at the pool during the event, but you can still get it done at the shelter for a special price of only $20 per dog. For safety reasons, only sprayed and neutered dogs are allowed into the event.

Description: Henry County Conservation Department’s next ACORN meeting will be held August 24th at 10 a.m. in the Oakland Mills Nature Center classroom. Speaker Cari Nicely will show a powerpoint in the classroom about planets and constellations followed by an overhead celestial demonstration. This is a free program. Description: Henry County Conservation is hosting a great american eclipse day celebration on August 21 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Disc Golf Shelter on Oakland Mills Road. Henry County Conservation will have activities and solar glasses for use at the event, and Tom Ellsworth will be present with his telescope for safe viewing of the eclipse. This is a free, come-and-go-as-you-please celebration for all ages. You may preregister at mycountyparks.com for this event.

Description: Join the Washington Public Library in downtown Washington for an Eclipse party on Monday August 21. The pre-eclipse party starts at 11 a.m. and will include a sunny storytime, snacks, and music. The library will have free eclipse viewing glasses to watch the eclipse at about 1 p.m. and afterward they’ll have a poetry writing experience.
