How track and field athletes qualify for state will be a little different this year. In the past for the boys in 3A, if you finished in the top three you were in, in 2A and 1A it was the top two. Demon Boys Head Coach Steve Roth serves on a state advisory committee for boys track and he says all first place finishers go to state but after that it depends on your time. He says they’ll look at what the 12th best time or distance is in each event and everyone within that will go to state. The same will apply to girls which will be a slight change from their existing system. Roth says it should help improve the competition level at state by getting the best to Des Moines. One other change, historically district meets have been on Fridays or Saturdays, because some sites have found it challenging to find workers on those days, the meets will be held on Thursday.
