The Washington Demons scored a win last night in the opening night of district play against Fairfield.
The Demons won 14-13, but not after some late game theatrics.
Washington started the game with the ball and had to punt the ball away, as the offense had struggles on third down all night. Fairfield made a push with their quarterback Dillon Fry breaking some big runs and making some good passes on a miss matched coverage of 5’ 7” Alan Sanchez and 6’2”Spencer Peterman.
The Trojans made it into the red zone, but a short pass to Justin Hammes ended up in the hands of Tanner Knupp for the interception, but in the next play, the Demons would find that ball security would be a an Achilles heel of the game, with Kyle Roder fumbling and the Trojans taking over inside the Demon’s 20.
Fairfield scored the touchdown off of a 21 yard touchdown pass from Fry to Mason Carnahan and that is the way the game would stay for the half. Washington fumbled the ball three times in the first half and lost two of them.
In the second half, the Demons kicked off the Fairfield, and the defense stepped up, not allowing anything going for the Trojans, and after a battle of field position, the Demons finally pushed one into the end zone off of a four yard run by Knupp.
The Demons weren’t done yet, as the defense kept the pressure on Fairfield, Daryn Seibelius showed off his passing abilities threading a needle to Knupp for his second touchdown.
The Demons had to hold the Trojans with under two minutes left to go, but the Demons couldn’t keep them out, as Fairfield pushed down the field, and off of a 26 yard touchdown pass from Fry to Vince Horras, the Demons saw Pella all over again.
With the score tied 14-13, the snap and hold was bad on the PAT and the kicker pushed it right no good, and the Demons took the win.
Head coach Randy Schrader talked in the post game about the defense for the Demons.
“We’re very aggressive on defense; we try to take advantage of the guys against the run.” Schrader said. “We’re really tough against the run right now we’ve got to get some things cleaned up in the secondary, but it should have never come down to a missed kick.”
Washington returns home next week for Homecoming to face Marion.
