The Washington Demon girl’s basketball team grabbed a big win against Burlington on Saturday.

The Demons reset their highest point total on the season from Friday with a 72-50 win, but despite the win this is only the second time Washington has let 50 points in against them.

The game started quick and played out like the two teams matched up on paper, with the Demons getting quick steals and leading 12-2 in the first four minutes, but Grace Redlinger picked up two quick fouls and had to sit for a majority of the first quarter and much of the second. The Demons led 22-11 after the first quarter, and carried a 39-27 lead into halftime.

Washington struggled with the pressure of Burlington all game, getting called for two five-second calls on inbounds plays in the first half. The Demons stepped it up in the second half though, finding their groove and landing some shots on their way to the win.

Washington did have some free throw woes in the game, going 29-53 on the night and just 13-27 in the first half. Demon head coach Phil Long says he was happy with the win, but not happy with the game.

“I know that I should just be super happy with our effort, and to score 72; I don’t know if these kids have scored 72 in their varsity careers collectively, and then following a new high against Davis County last night, so offensively it wasn’t a problem, except for not making free throws in the first half,” Long said. “I had to unfortunately light them up at halftime about mental toughness at the free throw line, and then in the second half we step up to the free throw line and only miss three or four.”

The Demons were led by Redlinger and Amber Salow with 14 points on the night and Dema Giardino in close second with 13.

Washington moves to 8-2 and restarts conference play on Tuesday against Ft. Madison.
