Those who plan to recreate on frozen ponds and lakes this winter should keep an eye out for ice that appears cloudy. DNR Fisheries Biologist Chad Dolan says when ice refreezes after warm weather causes it to thaw, it’s most likely filled with pockets of air . He says if you come across cloudy ice, it isn’t a problem if it’s over 8 inches thick, but it should be avoided if it’s less than 4 inches thick.
