With a company looking to build a new location in Kalona by this summer, the City is working on how to address traffic issues it may cause. Dollar General is moving forward with plans to put up a store in the Harvest Hill Subdivision, which is accessed from Highway 1.
Through conversations with the Iowa DOT, the City has learned that they can reduce the speed limit in that area, put in a turn lane, or install a flashing sign indicating there’s a turn. Mayor Ken Herington says they’ve found that a turn lane would make the least fiscal sense, as it’s projected cost is half a million dollars.
He adds normally it’s the city or developer who takes on the cost in a situation like this.
