The Washington Demon girls’ basketball team thought they may get an easier win last night when they hosted Central Lee, but that was not the case, as the Demons fell 48-37.

Washington scored right out of the gate, and then went cold as the second score from the Demons didn’t come until there was 2:13 left to go in the first quarter. Washington found themselves in an 8-6 hole at the end of the first, and the Demons never led in the game.

Washington’s offensive struggles continued, as they didn’t score in the second quarter until halfway through which led to them trailing by 10 at the half.

The Demons needed a big wake up call in the locker room, but the Washington would continue to struggle, and fall on senior night 48-37.

Washington was led by Grace Redlinger with 15 points, followed by Dema Giardino and Morgan Kimball with six.

Head coach Phil Long talked after the game about the flat game his team played.

“We came out flat and got flatter. For years on Saturday mornings I have walkthroughs, and keep kids in a normal time, have them there by 8:30 like they are going to school, [but] today we have a two hour delay, and yesterday we have no school, so no practice. Saturday we did nothing because of the snow ball classic that we were hosting, and Sunday we did nothing, Monday we didn’t go to school or play, and god only knows what the kids did all day long, and obviously stayed up real late last night, slept in late this morning, and we looked like it from the get-go,” Long said.

Washington honored their four seniors as well, including: Dema Giardino, Grace Redlinger, Stephanie Fishback and Addie Shive.

Washington falls to 10-5 and plays Keokuk for a big conference game on Friday.
