Three Washington Demon wrestlers are still competing after the first day of the 2015 Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling tournament. Sophomores Andrew Waite (113), Kyle Anderson (120), and senior Brad Skubal (195) have advanced to day two of competition at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Waite is in the consolation bracket after falling in his first match Dubuque Wahlert’s Tristan Brit by a 6-0 decision. Waite won his wrestle back match over Bondarant-Farrar Walter Long by fall, and is awaiting his next opponent in the consolation bracket.
Anderson also finds himself in the consolation bracket after being defeated by Davenport Assumptions’ Jacob Fenske with a pin. Anderson wrestled his way back into the tournament by eliminating Winterset’s Derek Koster in a 3-2 decision. He is awaiting his next opponent.
Skubal is the lone Demon wrestler still in the championship bracket after pulling an upset over Sheldon/South O’Brein’s Darin Greenfield in a 12-7 decision. Greenfield came into the tournament as the lone undefeated wrestler in the 195 pound weight class. Skubal advances to face Carlisle’s Andrew Hill in today’s championship quarterfinal match.
Sophomore Trey Van Weelden has been eliminated from competition after being pinned in the first round by Osage’s Brad Jenning’s in his first match, and by West Liberty’s Joe Kelly in his wrestle back bout. Van Weelden ends the season with a 32-12 overall record.
