The scoreless streak for the Washington Demon girls’ soccer team (1-5 overall; 1-2 Southeast) ended minutes into their Southeast Conference showdown with the Fort Madison Bloodhounds (0-6 overall). In fact, the Demons scored multiple goals for just the second time this season on their way to a 2-1 victory over the Bloodhounds.
Washington girls’ soccer coach Kyle Collins says the win gives his team a much needed moral boost, “It gives them confidence that they can do it.” Collins said, “They have to play 100 percent for the entire game but if they do that at least the games will be closer. They won’t lose 6-0 consistently.”
Prior to last night’s game, Washington was shut out 6-0 in conference matches with Fairfield and Keokuk at Washington High School. The Demons’ scoring drought came to an end six minutes into the game when senior Kayla Schindler put in her third goal of the season, giving Washington a 1-0 advantage. Two hundred eighteen minutes of game time had elapsed between goals for the Demons, who had last recorded a goal in the 28th minute of their 6-1 loss to the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks on April 14.
Fort Madison tied the game prior to halftime off the foot of senior Hunter Lowney, her team leading third goal of season. After playing even for much of the second half, Washington took the lead for good off the first goal of the season by junior Kristen Barber. Barber is the fourth player to score a goal this season for Washington, joining Schindler(3), senior Lauren Swan (1), and junior Stacy Ramirez (1).
The victory ends Washington’s five game losing streak, improving the Demons to 1-5 overall. Their next soccer match is scheduled for Monday evening hosting the Mount Pleasant Panthers (3-2 overall) at Washington High School.
