The IMS baseball (7-16) season came to a sudden end last night in first round of district play at Lone Tree, when they fell to Highland (17-8) by a final score of 8-7.
IMS held the lead through much of the game, after jumping out to a lead by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Highland stayed close before finally taking the lead for good by scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth inning.
IMS was down to their last out in the top of the seventh inning before putting runners on base with a single and an error by the Huskies. That’s when Kirby Shetler came through with a two run double to tie the ballgame 7-7.
Thunder struck however in the bottom of the seventh, when Highland senior Ben Bean led off the inning with a blast over the left field fence to win it for Highland with a walk off homerun.
IMS was led by sophomore Drake Brezina who tallied a pair of doubles and a single in four trips to the plate, while Kirby Shetler contributed a single and a double in four at bats.
IMS will lose just a pair of seniors from this year’s team, as both Shetler and Payton Miller ended their baseball careers last night. IMS finished the season with seven wins and 16 losses.
Highland was led by catcher Ben Bean with a double in addition to the game winning homerun, in four trips to the plate. He also had four RBI’s. Meanwhile shortstop Bill Burton added a single and walk in two at bats.
Highland improves their record to 17-8. They will play next tomorrow night at 7 pm, against Lone Tree, who won last nights second game over Sigourney 10-3.
