An annual athletic event returns to Washington this weekend. The Washington YMCA is holding the sixth annual Flying Pigs Duathlon tomorrow morning.
A duathlon is an athletic event, similar to a triathlon, but adds an additional running segment rather than incorporate a swimming leg of the race. The Flying Pigs Duathlon format begins with a 5K run, then a 20 mile bike ride, and ends with another 1.5 mile run.
Terry Hartzler with the Washington Y says the duathlon has averaged 70 participants during the first five years of the event. She adds you can register up to the day of the event as a single participant, a team of two, or a group of three.
Hartzler explains the route for the duathlon, “Everything starts and stops in front of our facility in downtown Washington.” Hartzler said, “They run a 5k from here and they loop back to transition to their bikes, and then they will go out old Highway 92 to West Chester and come back here to the gym, and will switch back into their running shoes and head out east of here for another mile and a half run to finish.”
Walk up registration opens at 7 tomorrow morning and runs up to the start of the event at 8 a.m. For more information or to register, contact the Washington YMCA.
