For students in the Winfield-Mt. Union School District it has been a shorter week than expected. The heat and humidity caused Superintendent Jeff Maeder to dismiss school early four days this week.

Maeder says the missed class time is accounted for in the district’s schedule for this year. W-MU is on hours for the school year, as opposed to days, which the superintendent says makes it easier to deal with lost class time. The state requires 1,080 hours in a school year and W-MU has 1,150 hours scheduled for this year.

Maeder, who is in his first year as the district’s Superintendent, says the students just don’t get any meaningful learning when the rooms are this hot, adding the district is looking into the cost of installing air conditioning in the remaining classrooms that currently don’t have it.

There are 470 students in the district.
