A phone scam has been reported by several businesses in the Kalona area. According to the Washington County Communications Center, the businesses have received calls from someone posing as an Alliant Energy representative, who then states the business’s power will be shut off if they don’t purchase a money card or wire money to them to cover an outstanding bill.
The communications center advises there are many scams out there and advises to use caution when someone calls regarding purchasing a money card or paying by phone. Do not give a money card to someone unless you know them or can visually identify them. Also, the center advises to never give personal information out over the phone.
