The Mid-Prairie wrestling team weren’t the only ones chasing history Thursday night at Tim Grady Gymansium in Wellman, trying to forge a path toward a team conference title, one of their own was trying to make history on an individual level and he succeeded.
Mid-Prairie junior Duncan McCain is the latest Golden Hawk to join the 100 win club.
McCain began his run toward 100 career wins on December 5th, 2013 when as a freshman he received a forfeit at a meet against Lone Tree. McCain’s first win in a contested match was December 7th, 2013 at the Jeremy Fulk Classic when he pinned Jacob Landrom of Pleasant Valley in just 51 seconds. McCain’s 50th win came as a sophomore on January 10th, 2015 at the Clear Creek Amana tournament when he pinned Jeradin Jones of City High in 1:17.
McCain has also had plenty of success on the grand stage as well, his first win at the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines came in his first ever match at state as part of the 2015 individual tournament where he topped Carter Cox of Atlantic by a 6-5 score, he would go on to finish in 6th place at his first state tournament. He owns an overall record of 3-3 at state.
The milestone 100th win came in front of the home crowd when the Golden Hawks battled the West Branch Bears. McCain flexed his muscles with a tech fall victory over Dayne Ehlts of West Branch by a 20-4 count in 3:28. Following his win he was greeted by a standing ovation from the crowd and his peers in the student section holding up congratulatory 100 signs to honor the win.
Duncan McCain is the sixth Golden Hawk wrestler to join the 100 win club at Mid-Prairie. McCain is the first since Josh Murphy last season. McCain joins Golden Hawk greats Murphy, Phirom Peterschmidt, MIcah Casper, Heath Ropp and Adam Greiner in the illustrious club. The all-time wins record at Mid-Prairie is 148 victories, held by Phirom Peterschmidt who wrestled for the Golden Hawks from 2010 to 2014.
