A familiar foe awaits the Washington Demon girls’ basketball team (7-9 overall) in their postseason opener later this month. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released Class 4A and 5A regional pairings this week, and the Washington Demons have been placed in the Class 4A Region 5 bracket with several teams they’ve faced this season.

The Demons’ regional opener is against the Oskaloosa Indians (2-15 overall) in Washington on February 17. The Demons edged the Indians 53-50 in a non-conference battle January 16 in Washington. Sophomore Sarah Nacos dropped a season-best 19 points versus Oskaloosa, while senior Amber Salow added eight points and 10 rebounds. The Demons struggled to contain Oskaloosa junior Alexis Westercamp, who had 26 points and 12 rebounds.

The six-team regional bracket includes all five members of the Southeast Conference. The second regional quarterfinal will be held at Mount Pleasant High School on February. 17, pitting the Fort Madison Bloodhounds (6-12 overall) against the Panthers (6-12 overall). The winner will travel to Keokuk on Saturday February 20 for a semifinal showdown with the No. 4 Chiefs (16-1 overall). The regional quarterfinal winner between the Demons and Indians will travel to Fairfield on Saturday, February 20 for a semifinal showdown with the No. 9 Trojans (14-5 overall). Washington lost a pair of games to the Trojans earlier this season.

The regional championship will be held Tuesday, February 23 at the highest remaining school’s gymnasium.
