The Iowa Department of Public Health is reminding Iowans to keep their health in mind while they may be traveling for spring breaks soon. Those traveling to warmer climates should take precautions to protect themselves against mosquito bites with long sleeves and bug repellent, as mosquitoes can carry a number of diseases including the Zika virus.
Danielle Pettit-Majewski, administrator of Washington County Public Health, explains the risk to pregnant women is there’s a trend of babies being born with microcephaly – a condition where the baby’s brain and head are underdeveloped. There is no vaccine for Zika currently.
Lynn Fisher, with Washington County Public Health, shares there has been one confirmed case of Zika in Iowa. The case was of an adult woman ages 61 to 80 years old who traveled to a country where Zika virus is ongoing.
