A single-vehicle rollover accident near Crawfordsville Thursday afternoon resulted in the death of a Washington man. At 1:07 p.m., authorities were notified of the accident on Spruce Avenue or 305th Street near Fern Cliff Road and Sockum Ridge Road. As heard live from the scene on KCII, University of Iowa Air Care responded to the wreck.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the SUV was traveling southbound on Spruce Avenue and left the roadway to the right before the Fern Cliff Road intersection, traveled through the intersection, over-corrected, crossed the center line and left the roadway to the left, entering the east ditch and rolled several times. The driver, Dirk Charles Weerman, was the only occupant of the 2004 Honda Pilot and was not wearing a seat belt. No airbags deployed and he was extricated from the car and transported by helicopter to the University of Iowa. Weerman succumbed to his injuries at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Washington County Rescue, Washington County Ambulance, Crawfordsville QRS, Crawfordsville Fire Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol responded to the scene.
