Iowa Governor Terry Branstad will visit Columbus High School today. Branstad will take a tour of the school and speak with students and staff in an assembly. Branstad will discuss his plan to use funds from a one cent sales tax earmarked for schools. The plan calls for some of the funds from the tax to be put towards water quality programs through 2049. The plan has faced criticism from both Democrats and Republicans at the Iowa State House. State Representative Jarad Klein has criticized the plan as an overreach of the executive branch and State Senator Kevin Kinney doesn’t like the cut in school funding. Branstad is expected to speak at 10:30 a.m. and the event is open to the public.
