Area anglers will have plenty of opportunities to catch different types of fish this year at Lake Belva Deer Park. Located five miles northeast of Sigourney, the 264-acre lake is home to blue gill, red eared sunfish, crappie, catfish, large mouth bass and walleye.

Dave Long is the Executive Director of the Keokuk County Conservation Board, and says the board agreed to recently resupply the lake with 1,000 eight-inch walleyes. Long couldn’t pinpoint an exact number of fish in the lake, but says its population is upwards of one million.

For those interested in harvesting fish from the lake, Long said there are cleaning stations set up at either boat ramp as well as at the cabin marina. The stations don’t provide electricity but there is room for use of lanterns or any other lighting devices.

Other amenities offered at Lake Belva Deer Park include: sheltered picnic areas, tent, electric, or cabin camping sites; a swimming beach, and an eight mile equestrian trail.
