A trio of top five individual performances assisted the Sigourney Savage boys’ golf team past the first round of postseason play Friday. The Savages opened their playoff run at the Lagos Acres Golf Course in Keota for the Class 1A Sectional golf tournament, competing against golfers from Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcom, English Valleys, Hartwick-Ladora-Victor, Iowa Valley, Keota, and Montezuma. The two lowest scoring teams and top four placing individuals advance to this week’s district tournament.

Sigourney finished the 18-hole event as the sectional champions, carding a collective score of 336. The Savages finished nine shots better than second place finisher, the Iowa Valley Tigers.

Senior Jordan Albert opened his final postseason golf run as the meet medalist, posting an eight over 80 for the top individual score. Freshman Dustin Haines concluded his first sectional golf tournament in second place, finishing one shot behind Albert. Junior Kaden Benson carded an 11 over 83, placing fourth in the individual competition. Sophomore Tanner Halleran rounded out the Savages’ scoring, ending his round in 92 strokes.

The Keota Eagles finished sixth in the team standings, collectively shooting 381. Junior Avery Conrad came away with the Eagles’ best individual finish, carding a 19 over 91.

The Savages and Tigers advance to this Friday’s district tournament hosted by North Mahaska at the Oskaloosa Golf Course. Sigourney will battle for a spot at the Class 1A state golf tournament against squads from Akley-Geneva-Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock, Belle Plaine, Colfax-Mingo, Hudson, Iowa Valley, New London, Winfield-Mount Union, and Van Buren.
