Senators from Iowa and Nebraska have teamed up to introduce Sarah’s Law, legislation that would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to take custody of a person in the country illegally and is charged with a crime resulting in the death or serious injury of another person. Senator Charles Grassley tells KCII News it is named after 21-year-old Sarah Root of Council Bluffs who was killed by a drunk driver in Omaha, Nebraska, on the night of her college graduation. The drunk driver was Edwin Mejia who was driving drunk, three times over the legal limit, and drag racing, and had entered the country illegally. He then posted bond and still remains at-large nearly five months later. The measure was introduced and will next go to committee for consideration.
