Heavy rain, lightning and thunder are common in Iowa during summer months and preparedness is key when it comes to severe weather, according to Washington and Keokuk County Emergency Management Coordinator Larry Smith. He reminds people to think through what they should do if bad weather arrives, regardless of where they are. Think about where you can seek shelter while on your daily commutes. Smith adds, should you come across a road covered in water, remember to turn around, don’t drown.

Also, Smith recommends that each household have two gallons of water per person per day, some non-perishable food, medication and cash in case a severe storm were to hit the area at any time. It’s also recommended to have supplies on hand for pets, like food and water.
