The Kalona City Celebration started five years ago as part of the downtown renovation project (and served as a way to recognize the people who spear-headed the effort). City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said the initial celebration went over well, so the city council made it an annual event. In addition to live music and activities for kids, it’s also an opportunity to recognize individuals in the community who are helping to promote Kalona. This year’s recipients of the Community Awards include Mark Schneider, Joyce Mattes, Mary Yoder, Casey Peck, and Warren and Paula Miller.
Additionally, the public will have the opportunity to weigh in on the next city project through the Community Visioning Program. Schlabaugh said the city spent the last year working with Trees Forever, Iowa State University, and an architectural firm to come up with ideas for landscaping plans. The city will be given the chance to look at conceptual renderings and give their thoughts about the projects. The celebration runs from 4-10:30 p.m., and all the activities are free. Kalona Cooperative Telephone Company will be showing a family movie at 8 p.m., and voting for which movie they show can be done on their Facebook page.
