There have been 247 traffic fatalities in Iowa so far this year, an increase of 23.5% over this time last year according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. Across the state, so far this year there have been 29 motorcycle fatalities, including one in Washington earlier this week. Last year Washington County had three traffic fatalities. Of those 247 traffic deaths, it’s known that 87, or less than half, were wearing seat belts. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau reminds Iowans to buckle up and don’t drive drunk.
