After a two-year layoff, a pair of Washington County rivals will meet on the football field once again. The No. 2 Washington Demon football team (1-0 overall) will be under the lights at Case Field for the first time this season, hosting the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks (1-0 overall) tonight in a non-district showdown. Both teams won their season openers by wide margins last week. Washington cruised by Albia (0-1 overall), 42-0, while Mid-Prairie downed Louisa-Muscatine (0-1 overall), 41-14.
Washington’s opening week shutout was the fourth recorded by the Demon defense since 2013, and the first since winning 23-0 last September versus the Fairfield Trojans. Last week, junior quarterback Ryan Reighard accounted for 307 yards of total offense (187 yards rushing) and three touchdowns to pace Washington’s offense. Four Demons recorded their first varsity touchdowns of their careers. Junior Jack Redlinger and sophomore Tristan Westphal-Edwards each had a rushing touchdown in the first half, while sophomore Cade Hennigan threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Sinn in the third quarter.
The Golden Hawks’ ground game amassed 283 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns in their season opening victory. Junior Keaton Duwa carried the ball twice for a team-best 129 yards. Senior Ricky Vargas added 84 yards rushing and found the endzone twice. Junior Karson Duwa completed six of his nine passes for 91 yards, throwing a nine-yard touchdown pass to senior Levi Duwa in the third quarter. Levi Duwa, who has verbally committed to the University of Iowa football program , recorded 3.5 total tackles and two sacks. Junior Terrhyn Jacoby converted all five of his extra point attempts, and added six points to the scoreboard on a pair of field goals.
Tonight marks the 39th meeting of the schools on a football field and the first since 2013. Washington has won 27 of the games, and holds a five-game winning streak in the series. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and KCII Sports will have live play-by-play coverage beginning with the Washington Hy-Vee Pregame Show at 7 p.m. on AM/FM KCII. The game will also stream online at KCIIRadio.com and on the KCII mobile app.
