The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team is back under the lights tonight when they travel to Mount Vernon to take on the Mustangs.
The Golden Hawks enter the game with an overall record of 1-2, 0-1 in district play, dropping their last two games in a row, including a 21-6 defeat last Friday in Wellman at the hands of the West Liberty Comets. So far this season Mid-Prairie has 775 yards of total offense and is averaging 20 points per game. The Golden Hawk defense is surrendering 28 points and 439 yards per game. Individually, Mid-Prairie is led by Karson Gingerich through the air. The junior has completed 24 of 46 passes for 296 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. His favorite target is Levi Duwa with nine catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Ricky Vargas has 241 yards on 41 carries and four touchdowns.
Mount Vernon comes into the contest with an overall record of 1-2. They are 1-0 in district play. After dropping a pair of tough non district games to Solon and West Delaware the Mustangs bounced back in a big way last week, blasting Camanche 78-0 in their district opener. In the game, five different Mustangs scored touchdowns while Mount Vernon racked up 557 total yards. The defense pitched a shut out, forcing four Indians turnovers and allowed just 66 total yards. Mount Vernon is led by junior quarterback Drew Adams. He is 33 of 80 through the air for 535 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. His favorite target is Jack Bootsmiller with eight catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Sam Moore is the leading rusher with 263 yards on 47 carries and two scores this year.
The Mustangs advanced all the way to the UNI-Dome and the state championship game a year ago before being beaten by Spirit Lake 70-56. This match up also features a pair of future Hawkeyes in the trenches with University of Iowa commit Levi Duwa on the Mid-Prairie defensive line, listed at 6’3” 235lbs and Tristan Wirfs on the Mount Vernon offensive line, listed at 6’5” 315lbs. This is the 34th all time meeting between the two schools with the Mustangs holding a 20-13 lead in the series. These two last met in 1997, a 27-19 Mount Vernon win. Mid-Prairie’s last win in the series came in 1991, by a 9-6 score.
