Three weeks ago an earthquake rumbled in Oklahoma and the shocks were felt all the way in Washington County. That quake had a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale, according to the U.S.G.S. Would you know what to do if you were somewhere and an earthquake hit?

This month is National Preparedness Month and the Department of Homeland Security has shared some tips regarding earthquake safety. Be prepared – identify safe places like an interior wall of a building or a sturdy piece of furniture you can crawl under. It’s recommended to drop to the ground, cover your head and neck with your arms, and if possible crawl to the safe place and hold on. Have supplies on hand, like water, food, medication and documents. Also, be sure to have a family emergency communication plan in place so you know how to contact and find each other, should an earthquake or any other event happen, like a tornado.
