The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team traveled to No. 8 Mount Vernon Friday night, falling to the Mustangs 49-31.

Mount Vernon jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the first half. The Golden Hawks answered with a 65 yard touchdown pass from Karson Gingerich to Carter Reinier to make it 14-7. Mount Vernon responded with a 12 play 80 yard drive that ended in a touchdown to make it 21-7. Down again by two scored Mid-Prairie countered with a 15 play 65 yard drive that ended with a Gingerich to Justin Schwartz touchdown on the final play of the half, leaving the score 21-14 going to the break.

The Golden Hawks tied the game with their first drive of the second half, keyed by an 83 yard Ricky Vargas run, Levi Duwa punched it in from one yard out. Reiner then picked off Mount Vernon quarterback Drew Adams on the Mustangs next possession setting up a Terryhn Jacoby 40 yard field goal to give the Hawks their first lead at 24-21. Mount Vernon drove to the Golden Hawk one on their next possession before Jared Miller recovered a fumble for the Golden Hawks. Mid-Prairie was forced to punt from their own end zone and Cale Snedden returned it 45 yards for a score to give the Mustangs the lead back. Mount Vernon would add two more touchdowns through the air to put the game out of reach.

Vargas led the Golden Hawks with 20 carries for 167 yards on the ground. Gingerich was 14 of 23 for 183 yards and three touchdowns. With the loss Mid-Prairie is now 1-3 on the year and returns to Wellman next week for Homecoming when they host Camanche.
